Postoperative Ileus (POI) Teleconference Series - Program Completed
Advances in the Management of Postoperative IleusProgram description
Postoperative ileus (POI) is often considered an inevitable response to surgical trauma and is one of the most common reasons for delayed discharge from the hospital after abdominal surgery. Although POI is a recognized condition, it is not always 'top of mind' with the clinician. If left untreated, POI can cause serious complications and can be prolonged by perioperative opioid use. Aside from the impact on the patient, the cost of POI in the United States is estimated to be from $750 million to $1 billion. These unnecessary hospital costs can be avoided with effective strategies for prevention and management. This program explores the problem of POI and provides new insights about effectively preventing and treating POI among a broad range of surgical patients. An illustrative patient case study and interactive question-and-answer session round out this comprehensive presentation.
Learning Objectives
After taking part any of these three activities, participants should be better able to:
- Formulate strategies for the management of POI in postsurgical patients
- Assess the effectiveness of new treatment modalities for POI
- Compare the effectiveness of current treatment modalities for POI
- Identify patients who are at greatest risk of developing POI
- Define the pharmacoeconomic benefits of enhanced management of POI
- Explain the importance of treating POI
