Learning Objectives

After taking part in this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the unique challenges of cardiac surgery and hemostasis
  • Review the implications of blood transfusions in cardiac surgery patients
  • Describe the current pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic blood management interventions available for use in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
  • Interpret the clinical trial data for pharmacologic hemostatic agents
  • Evaluate the role of pharmacologic hemostatic agents in reducing perioperative blood loss and transfusion requirements
